Pakistani cancer researcher designs qipao to bridge Pakistan and China

The life of a scientific researcher includes not only doing experiments, analyzing data, and writing reports, but a bit of fun activities like vlog filming and food hunting, and if he/she will, he/she can design qipao for the 2021 Global Qipao Festival and Invitation Exhibition held in Hangzhou.

Asim Mushtaq, a Pakistani PhD scholar at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University focusing on smart nano bio-materials for cancer diagnosis and treatment, is better-known recently for another role of his as reported by China Economic Net and Associated Press of Pakistan as a fashion designer.

In his two designs, small pieces of mirror known as Sheesha (originated in Iran and brought to India during the Mughal era) are attached to collars of one dress to replace the traditional knotted buttons; on the other, lavender flowers are embroidered on the bottom, which instantly makes the dress look decent or even noble and generates the imagination of a lady spinning around in a large Pakistani lavender garden.

When Asim told a Pakistani tailor that, his motif design was to integrate Pakistani elements into the Chinese qipao, the two minds immediately clashed out the idea. "How about fabrics?" one might ask. "In my country silk is not produced in high quantity, therefore we tried to make qipao with ZARI (an embroidery design popular in Mughal era) and synthetic silk." After just shy of a month, two exquisite Pakistani-style qipao were shipped to China with the help of his sister, and exhibited in China National Silk Museum with the help of Miss Do khai ly and Prof Zhao Feng.

Not too long ago, as a visitor Asim was filming and appreciating fashion works in China National Silk Museum; now at the same spot behind the glass his dresses are displayed, as if Pakistani culture along with himself are also displayed and magnified. He feels the same way when his video series "Explore China with Asim" on YouTube are liked and commented by many people.

Asim is dedicated to becoming a bridge between China and Pakistan, a philosophy well brought from his favorite Chinese character "".

"I learned that '' is a conjunction between words, like 'you and me', 'me and China'. It resembles a bridge connecting two things together." Benefited from a virtual bridge-- a full scholarship, Asim has been able to come closer to China since 2019.

Gradually, he learned that "" is more than a conjunction, but a Chinese wisdom. "" can be "和平(peace)", which he particularly feels at night when walking on the streets, or "和睦(concord)" which he sees everyday when working in the lab with his co-workers, etc.

This year, under the guidance of Prof. Xiangdong Kong and Dr. M. Zubair Iqbal, Asim and his team have won the gold medal in the 7th Zhejiang International Internet Plus Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition with a cost-effective technology utilizing natural resources to grow some bacteria to treat environmental pollution. This good news quickly traveled to Pakistan household through Express News (a Pakistani TV channel). "Once water is purified, these bacteria again become one part of the nature to re-loop the process." Out of question, Asim has understood the Chinese philosophy "和谐(harmony)" well enough to put it into practice.

Interestingly, fibroin, which is extracted from the silkworm cocoon, can be used in anticancer drug delivery applications. The bridge between two of his unrelated projects is thus found. Nevertheless, according to Asim, everything on the planet is made of and connected by materials.
